Winner - 2019 Scottish Land and Business - Making it Happen Awards - Rural Housing

Rural Housing Award, sponsored by Velux: Inverbroom Estate, Garve for dedication to sympathetic period restorations and providing housing for local families.

This estate has spent the last fifteen years renovating and repairing an extensive stock of Victorian era Estate housing. This kind of work is not an easy task as the range of repairs required to vernacular buildings can require skills in stone masonry, lime mortaring and slating as well as joinery and building skills.

This project has been ongoing for a considerable amount of time whilst providing jobs the estate also provides housing within 18 estate houses, many of which were before previously derelict or unfit to live in.

Locally this project has been admired for its attention to detail including the stone slabbed courtyard and drystone arches in the old stable blocks of Inverbroom farm steaming which now provides accommodation for local families living near the West Coast village of Ullapool.

This rural housing resource has provided a mainstay of rural affordable housing for a variety of people living in an area which suffers from an under supply of private rental property due to its popularity for tourism.
